We are pleased to welcome you to midwifery care. We
are committed to providing safe, personal, family oriented
care. We are providing the following information to acquaint
you with the services we offer and what you may expect
from our practice.
Barbara:
I have been a practicing midwife since 1976 and am the
mother of two grown daughters, one born in a hospital and
one born at home. I graduated from a three year direct entry
midwifery program and have worked as a midwife in both hospitals
and homes in the USA and Canada and Europe. I am interested
in and experienced with the use of both herbal and homeopathic
remedies to promote well-being during pregnancy, birth and
postpartum for mothers and infants.
Angela:
Angela is a mother of three children, one born in hospital
and two born at home. She graduated from the Seattle Midwifery
School in December of 2006. Angelas training at the
Seattle Midwifery School focused on both home and birth
centre births, leaving her very comfortable with out of
hospital care. She has also acquired hospital experience
both here in Victoria, and in the Caribbean. Before attending
midwifery school Angela worked as a doula, breastfeeding
counselor, and childbirth educator. Angela, like Barbara,
also shares the philosophy of using herbs and homeopathic
remedies to promote well-being.
WHAT IS A MIDWIFE?
Midwives are skilled practitioners, attending normal birth,
giving care and advice to the mother during pregnancy, birth
and postpartum period. Midwives are trained and skilled
in detecting any deviations from normal in both mother and
baby. In situations that deviate from normal, the midwife
will refer to an appropriate physician. I am prepared to
use emergency measures when necessary. This is consistent
with how midwives practice all over the world.
As a midwife I see pregnancy and birth as a normal life
transition for a healthy woman. Therefore, out of respect
for the process and the womans ability to give birth,
I believe unnecessary interference is an unwise interruption
of your bodys function. I monitor and guide, respecting
the choices and values of the family.
As a Registered Midwife, I have admitting privileges at
Victoria General Hospital the only hospital in the Greater
Victoria Region providing maternity services. I can order
screening, diagnostic, laboratory tests and medications
that apply to low risk pregnant women. These may include
tests such as ultrasound, pap smears, swabs and routine
bloodwork.
