Nicole Seguin
Registered Midwife
I have been practicing midwifery since graduating from
the Ryerson University Midwifery Education Program in 2003.
In my full-time practice in Ontario, prior to moving to
BC, I worked largely with women new to Canada and women
facing a variety of other challenges in their lives. I believe
birth is one of the most powerful, life changing events
a woman experiences and it is an honour to be included in
that experience. One of the most enjoyable parts of my job
is when I can help to make that experience a wonderful one
for all involved. I believe strongly in the model of informed
choice decision making and feel my job is to empower you
with knowledge and choices about your care.
Prior to becoming a midwife, I worked as a Community Health
Worker for over 10 years with the Regent Park Community
Health Centre in Toronto. My work focused on working with
families around issues of housing, food and income access.
Midwifery became a natural extension of my desire to work
with women, respect their voice and choices and work in
the health care field. I currently hold privileges at BC
Women's Hospital and St. Paul's. I am also equally experienced
and comfortable with homebirth for low-risk women.
I moved to Vancouver with my partner and two daughters
aged 9 and 5. Both were born into the caring hands of midwives
and my birth experiences with them strengthened my desire
to become a midwife. My first daughter was born at home,
the second in the hospital. My personal and professional
experience is extensive and I look forward to sharing it
with you as your midwife.
"Thank
you so much for all you did in helping make Gavin's birth
such a natural and wonderful experience! Our labour and
delivery was more joyful and powerfu than we ever could
have imagined and we couldn't have done it without all of
your calm reassurance and guidance. " M, T and Gavin

Registered Midwife
I was drawn to Midwifery for its women and
baby centered approach to pregnancy and birth, along with
its commitment to wellness and preventative health care.
Prior to becoming a Midwife, I lived in
Victoria and was working as a project manager at a non-profit
organization focused on urban health, food access, and
organic agriculture. While working there I had the opportunity
to partner with a range of organizations including pregnancy
outreach programs, transitional housing projects, community
centre groups, and diabetes prevention programs. During
that time I trained as a doula and as a breastfeeding
counsellor. Over the years, I have volunteered at a crisis
line, at a birth control clinic, and for a number of grassroots
organizations working towards social and environmental
change. I also have years of experience working with children
- teaching ESL, dance, drama, art, gymnastics, and supporting
children with autism to reach their full potential. I
am a graduate of the UBC Midwifery Education Program.
In addition, I have a degree in Women's Studies and Sociology
from the University of Victoria.
I enjoy catching babies in the hospital,
in women's homes, on dry land or in the water! Attending
each birth is an honour and a privilege, and helping to
greet lovely little babies in to this world is a pleasure.
I am passionate about providing supportive
and compassionate care with the goal of helping to make
pregnancy and birth powerful and rewarding experiences.
I am greatly looking forward to being a part of your journey
through pregnancy and the transition to welcoming a new
baby in to your lives.
"Thank you so much for taking such
good care of Mattea and I throughout the pregnancy and
the birth. Especially the birth! Even though we had to
have doctors involved, having you there with us made me
feel safe and cared for and also helped me to keep things
in perspective. It was a long and difficult journey and
I'm so thankful you were with us through it all (even
all the late night pages!). I'm looking forward to your
help with baby #2!" Love from the Riley family"

Registered Midwife
I'm happy to be practicing in Vancouver where
midwifery was introduced to me. I was born in Vancouver
into the hands of a skilled midwife and from that time onward
the seed of midwifery has been planted in my mind and heart.
To me, midwifery comes as a natural extension of my core
values related to empowerment, family, the strength of women
and a love of babies. Midwifery-pregnancy, labour, delivery,
and postpartum never cease to fascinate and excite me.
I have been attending births now for six
years now and have had the privilege of catching over one
hundred babies. I have trained and practiced in both rural
and urban centres in BC and Uganda, and held hospital privileges
in both secondary-level referral hospitals and tertiary
referral hospitals in BC. I am a graduate of the UBC midwifery
program and therefore have a strong grounding in evidence-based
practice and practical experience. As well, I am a trained
doula and breastfeeding counsellor. I have, in the past,
volunteered on crisis lines, midwives' offices and provided
my services as a postpartum doula. Prior to entering into
midwifery I worked for 9 years with autistic and other special-needs
adults and children in community settings.
My hope is to offer midwifery services to
women, their partners and families in and around Vancouver,
and specifically within the West End (where I plan to work
and live). As well, I am interested in offering my midwifery
services to women who are in marginalized society- new immigrants,
low income and women in complex social situations as long
appointment times and individualized care can be especially
helpful for these women.
"Chloe was great right from
our first pre-natal appointment all the way through to the
excellent post-partum care we received from her. As nervous
first-time parents who wanted to be well-informed of all
the normal stages of pregnancy, delivery options, possible
complications, and what to expect when our daughter arrived,
we hoped to find a patient, experienced midwife who would
answer all of our questions and be respectful and supportive
of the choices we made. Chloe was that and more! She made
herself available to us whenever we called with concerns
and her calm, friendly way of guiding us through the delivery
of Brenna really put us at ease. She was a wonderful part
of the whole process and we would love to have her deliver
our next child." Angela, Rusty, and Brenna Rook

To me, midwifery is both a science and an
art, a career and a calling. It is an amazing privilege
to accompany women and families along the journey of pregnancy,
birth and early parenting.
Having a baby is an event which influences
and is influenced by many aspects of a woman's life. My
job as a midwife is to help you make choices that make sense
in the context of your life circumstances, and to use my
heart, hands and head to help make your birth experience
safe and satisfying. I love what I do, and look forward
to working with the other midwives at Bloom to provide personalized
care to you and your growing family.
I first learned what a midwife was when I
was a high school student in Ontario, where midwives had
recently been integrated into the provincial health care
system. I immediately recognized midwifery as a vocation
that could bring together my skills and interests in biology,
holistic health, and community building. I spent a few years
working and traveling - including a move to BC in 1999 -
before immersing myself in the study of bellies, babies
and birth.
I've been working with women and families
for many years now - first as a clinic assistant, doula,
prenatal educator, and crisis line counselor, and now as
a registered midwife. My formal training is from the UBC
Midwifery Program, where I trained in several communities
across Western Canada and developed a special interest in
waterbirth, which I studied for my graduating research.
"I was privileged to have Leah at
the birth of my second son, Silas. Even though we had just
met, my husband and I felt very comfortable with you. I
had had a traumatic birth experience in the past, but you
gave me the strength and courage to get through it this
time. I felt safe to do what I needed to do - you never
made me feel embarrassed or told me to be quiet. You gently
reminded me to trust my body. The birth of Silas was an
amazing experience for me. It was fast, furious and hard
work but it was exactly how I wanted it - normal and natural!
I feel a tremendous sense of pride. Thank you! You are truly
amazing at what you do and I am grateful for having you
at the birth of Silas." Marie, Jeremy, Ashdyn and Silas
