Karen Gerlach,
Registered Midwife
I was born and educated in Germany, a country where 100
% of all babies are delivered with the help of midwives.
After obtaining my midwifery certificate at the University
Hospital Erlangen in 1979, I worked in various hospital
settings in Bavaria. In 1989 I opened my private practice
in order to provide women with continuity of care throughout
the childbearing cycle, from conception to weaning of their
child. My focus since has been education and support for
mothers through various courses and counselling for parents
with special concerns such as 'colicky' babies or perinatal
loss.
I also have three years of training in Haptonomy, the science
of the feeling sense, with Dr. Frans Veldman in the Netherlands.
This enables me to offer practice sessions to parents who
want to start building a trusting relationship with their
unborn baby at the early age of 20 weeks. I have always
pursued a holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth
by integrating Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Hypnosis and herbal
medicine.
In September 2000 I immigrated to Canada after completing
my midwifery registration for B.C. I established Family
Midwifery Care in New Westminster together with a colleague
before permanently moving to Prince George one year later.
Living and working in Northern BC has been a joy due to
the wonderful clientele and excellent support from hospital
staff and other medical professionals. I have 4 grown children
and a grandson.
