Midwifery Facts and Figures

  • B.C. midwives have been regulated by the government and publicly funded since January 1998.
  • There are currently 196 practicing midwives registered in B.C. and approximately 850 practicing midwives throughout Canada: http://bitly.com/eYhYoe 
  • B.C. midwives now deliver nearly 10% of the province's babies each year. In Canada, they deliver 2% of the country's babies.
  • In B.C. approximately 30 % of midwifery clients choose to give birth at home.
  • Midwives are able to care for up to 60 clients per midwife per year.
  • The University of British Columbia accepts approximately 10 new applicants each year. BC Student midwives must successfully complete a four-year university degree program in order to be eligible for registration with the College of Midwives of BC.
  • Publicly-funded midwifery care is available in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nunavut, Nova Scotia, and the NWT.
  • Canada was the last developed country to legally recognize the practice and profession of midwifery.
