Welcome to
Community Midwifery Care!
Originally hailing from Australia (Terri)
and BC (Maggie) we have attended hundreds
of births at home, large and small hospitals,
remote nursing stations and everywhere in
between. We have over 50 years combined midwifery
and nursing experience. We can’t imagine
a better place for low risk women to give
birth than on Salt Spring Island and we are
delighted to be welcoming our second generation
of island babies!
Low risk women can give birth locally -
either at home or at the Lady Minto Hospital
birthing room (with en-suite Jacuzzi) Women
with risk factors are cared for by us and
our physician and midwifery colleagues at
Victoria General Hospital. If you live in
a community with no midwifery care and are
able to arrange accommodation on Salt Spring,
we often have room for a few out-of-town moms.
As a shared-care team practice, you will
have an opportunity to meet and get to know
each midwife. Our practice is a teaching practice
and senior midwifery students, under our mentorship,
will be involved with your care.
"Thank you so much for guiding our
birth experience with your wonderful wisdom,
kindness and laughter. We are happy to have
such great memories of our daughter's entrance
into this world. Your visits after her birth
have given reassurance to us and have also
refreshed our spirits. In the chaos of these
first few days, you have been a guiding light."
- First time parents - birth at LMH.
"Thank you so much for being such
a wonderful midwife and such a compassionate
and present human being. I appreciate your
openness and sharing of your own experiences
of birth and parenting. Our talks were always
grounding in reality as well as reassuring
despite the precarious nature of my pregnancy.
I think of you often, our baby is a constant
reminder of your care and attention to me
during the pregnancy and birth." - First
baby - high risk pregnancy & cesarean
birth at VGH
"Thank you deeply for your presence
both wise and gentle at the birth of our daughter.
Your respectful, experienced care before,
during and after those labours of love was,
and is, a great gift to our family."
- Father of 4 - home birth
