Lori Miller, RN MSN CNM RM
Registered Midwife
My journey into the care and support of families has been
one with many paths taken. I graduated from the University
of British Columbia in 1983 with a Baccalaureate in Nursing
(BSN). That program left an indelible mark on me. Empowerment,
communication, family, and women's health were more than
words, they were critical elements of my philosophy for
life and nursing care. I began my career in pediatrics working
at BC Children's Hospital in a variety of settings. I loved
working with children of all ages and their families. In
1990, I graduated from UBC with a Master's in Nursing (MSN).
In 1992 and 1995, I had my own personal experience with
midwives. My boys, Alexander and Jake were both born into
the hands of a midwife at BC Women's Hospital. I credit
the midwife for leading me down this glorious path, because
as she was taking Jake and I to a post partum room for the
night, she said to me "Don't you think you'd like to
be a part of this?" It took me few years, but here
I am.
During those years, I have been teaching Childbirth Education
at BC Women's, working as a labour and delivery nurse at
BC Women's Hospital and Burnaby Hospital, and teaching undergraduate
and graduate nursing students at the University of Victoria.
In 2003, I graduated with a Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery
from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing
(FSMFN) in Kentucky, USA. During that time, I learned from
some of the most influential women in midwifery in the United
States. I am a board Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) in the
US. I have also recently completed a Post Masters Certificate
as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
I am excited to be a part of supporting families through
the childbearing experience here in Richmond and Delta.
My philosophy of care remains the empowerment and support
of women and their families as they make the choices that
are best for them as they move through this wonderful journey
of pregnancy and birth.
