Midwives

Irene Callander, Gillian Welsh, Aleka Stobo

Serving

North Vancouver, West Vancouver

Irene qualified as a registered nurse and midwife in Scotland in the 1970s. She immigrated to Canada shortly afterward, and practiced as a labour and delivery nurse at Lion’s Gate Hospital until midwifery was legalized in 1998. The founding member of Midwifery Associates, Irene combined nursing with her midwifery practice up until 2006, and now solely works as a midwife.

Gillian qualified as a registered nurse in England in the early 1980s and had varied acute medical experience, including ER and a research position, before completing her midwifery education in 1994. She practiced in a London tertiary referral center for high-risk pregnant women and their newborns until her immigration to Canada in 1998. Gill worked as a labour and delivery nurse at Lion’s Gate Hospital whilst registering to practice midwifery here, and has been a practice partner with Irene since 2002.

Aleka graduated from UBC’s Faculty of Medicine with a Bachelor of Midwifery. During her degree she trained with obstetricians, pediatricians, GPs and midwives in BC and Holland. Aleka spent the last year of her education with Irene and Gill, where clients gave them such positive feedback she was asked to join them as a partner upon graduation in 2007.

“I can’t thank you enough for the care you gave me during and after my pregnancy. I rave to everyone about how great you all are. I will be in touch when it is time for number 2!”

“We can honestly say that your experience, competency, support, professionalism and encouragement has been like the “wind beneath our wings” with respect to our pregnancy(ies) and delivery(ies). We love you all!”

“Having your care during pregnancy & then our birth meant so much to us. Your voice, your way, your touch was extremely calming & trusting to me. If we are lucky enough to be blessed with a second pregnancy we would be honored to have you as our midwife. You were such a special part of our journey into parenthood.”
