Jane Hedges,
Registered Midwife
Hello my name is Jane Hedges and I live in Prince George
BC with my husband and three children. My family and I traveled
from Prince George to New Zealand in January of 2000, so
that I could undertake my Midwifery training at Otago Polytechnic.
My journey to midwifery began following the birth of my
two oldest children, at first I worked with women in the
area of breastfeeding and labor support. It was soon after
becoming a Doula that I realized I wanted to offer women
more than labor support, so I embarked on my Midwifery training.
Once I completed my midwifery training and gained valuable
clinical experience my family and I returned home to Prince
George in the fall of 2004. I am happy to be home and to
offer midwifery care to women in the greater Prince George
area.
As a midwife I work in partnership with women providing
women with the necessary support, care and advice during
pregnancy, labor and the post-partum period. I believe that
pregnancy and birth are healthy and normal events in a womans
life, best supported where she feels safe, empowered and
informed whether that is at home or in the hospital. My
philosophy and the way in which I practice, respects this
process which I believe we should not routinely interfere
with without medical indication. As a Registered Midwife
and Mother, I have a limited caseload to ensure that the
care that I provide is down to earth, unhurried, up to date
and directed by your needs. It is care given by woman,
for woman.
"Thank-you so much for helping to bring our wonderful
new son into this world. There have been so many fears and
insecurities and you have helped to calm them all. There
have also been so many incredible joys and we have been
honored to have shared them with you. You have given us
so much and have asked for nothing in return but know that
there is unending praise and friendship from this new family..."

"We would like to thank you for all your hard work.
It was wonderful to have you on our journey. The support
and information that you provided was amazing. We enjoyed
each and every visit. I'm looking forward to baby number
two and hope that you can deliver him/her. I wish you all
the best with your practice and will recommend you to all
the ladies I know. I am still in awe at the amount of time
you spent with us in the delivery room, and am so thankful
you were there." A.V.

Judy DeFreitas,
Registered Midwife
My passion for midwifery started when I was first doing
my psychology undergraduate degree at McMaster University.
I became really interested in womens issues and wanted
to find an empowering career that would focus on that. Midwifery
was the perfect choice as it combined my passion for education
and empowering women through their pregnancy. Even though
I was working towards becoming a midwife I did not actually
start my full time formal education for another four years.
In early 2002 my partner and I relocated to Dunedin, New
Zealand so that I could attend Otago Polytechnic. I completed
a three year degree and received a Bachelors of Midwifery.
I successfully passed the National Midwifery Exam and become
registered in New Zealand. Shortly after becoming registered
I moved to Sydney, Australia to work at Westmead Hospital.
Working at such a large tertiary hospital gave me an opportunity
to work with countless women in all aspects of their pregnancy.
After living overseas for four years I became homesick for
Canada and decided it was time to return. Even though I
had grown up in Ontario I under took the registration process
in British Columbia. After a long road I finally became
a registered midwife in BC in October 2006.
In June of 2007 I relocated to Prince George to join Jane
at Northern Midwifery Care. I am so pleased to be able to
provide care to women and their growing families in Northern
BC.
