Support Midwifery in BC

Dear Supporters of Midwives, Moms and Babies:

You may be aware that it has been announced that The UBC Midwifery Program will be undergoing a funding review.  The program has been chronically under resourced since its inception and repeated requests for adequate funding levels have been denied.  The Program requires a commitment from the Ministry of Advanced Education to create a sustainable and balanced plan in order to be able to meet BC’s growing need for quality primary maternity care providers.  Funding for more faculty staff is urgently required, along with adequate resources to recruit and retain those staff members.  In addition the program requires funding for expansion to meet BC’s need for more midwives, especially in rural and remote areas.  We urge you to lend your assistance to this very important issue, as it relates to the support and future of midwifery in BC.  Please contact your MLA and request that they commit to supporting the moms and babies of BC.  See the link on this page for your MLA's contact information.

By showing your support for Midwifery, you will be helping improve maternity care in BC.

A growing body of research points to the role of midwifery in reducing c-section rates and improving the numbers of babies who breastfeed. With your support, we will bolster our efforts to empower women and their families to make informed decisions about pregnancy and childbirth. Beyond our work educating the public and health care professionals about the benefits of midwifery, we are actively engaged in more fully integrating midwives into the health care system, helping rural midwives gain hospital privileges and introducing midwifery to communities, particularly those in rural areas, that don’t yet have them. We are especially committed to finding models of care that best work within individual communities. You can show your support for midwifery by sending a letter to your MLA, the Minister of Health, and the Premier letting them know you want more midwives in our province. Your voice is important, and we thank you for your support!family
