Carolyn Johnston, RM
Since the first birth I managed on my own
in 1998, I have practiced in a variety of settings including
urban, rural and a wonderful and challenging time among
the poor of Tanzania (east Africa). After my training at
Seattle Midwifery School, I joined a home birth practice
in Alberta. In March, 2002, I came to the lower mainland,
where I have been enjoying working with families having
both home and hospital births.
My goal is to develop a relationship with each of my clients
that includes caring, trust and clear communication of what
each family wants for this precious time. It is important
to me that all my clients have the information they need
to make informed choices about themselves and their babies.
"I am so grateful to have had
you as my midwife. I have never connected so well with anyone
in the healthcare field, and I felt so respected. Being
able to take responsibility for my own and my family's health
choices is so important to me;When I look at my birth experience,
I can honestly say that I cannot imagine it more ideal.
The atmosphere was so peaceful. I felt at ease and able
to relax completely knowing that there was no interference,
and that everyone present truly wanted to be. Thank you
so much for always having my best interests at heart and
being someone that I could trust. Thank you for caring so
much!"

Rachel Joy Wisselink, RM
My journey to midwifery started at a very young age on
a dairy farm in Smithers B.C. surrounded by birthing animals
and a large Dutch family where childbirth and large families
were very much the norm.
After graduating from highschool I entered the UBC midwifery
program. During my training I worked in Vancouver and the
Lower Mainland, Prince George, Smithers, Port McNeill and
Pakistan, giving me a broad range of experiences.
I graduated from UBC in the spring of 2006 and have been
working in the Lower Mainland since then, except for the
month this past summer that I spent working in Africa.
I love working with people, especially women and their
new babies. It is an honor and a privilege to walk beside
and empower a woman and her family during this exciting,
life-altering time. It is my hope that one day, every woman
in the world will have the option of having a midwife attend
her birth.
Though I am a country girl at heart, I am enjoying the
opportunities and wide range of activities the city has
to offer. However, when I am not catching babies or visiting
with my clients in the clinic or at their homes you can
often find me backpacking, snowshoeing, skiing, fishing
or involved in some other outdoor sport.
