They have always felt called to support and care for 2SLGBTQ+ parents and gestational carriers, offering them the presence, compassion, and understanding they deserve during their reproductive journeys. For Ams, midwifery isn’t just about bringing new life into the world — it’s about making sure that everyone, regardless of their identity, feels seen, supported, and cared for throughout their reproductive health journey. 

What keeps Ams, in love with their work is the powerful intersection between reproductive justice and broader social justice movements. A Personal Journey of Identity and Care 

Born in Tobermory, Ontario, a picturesque fishing village on the shores of Lake Huron, Ams, is a white first-generation settler with German heritage. Growing up on the lands of the Saugeen First Nation, their upbringing was deeply tied to the natural world. In addition to their work as a midwife, Ams identifies as Queer and Agender and uses they/them pronouns. Their identity as a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community informs how they approach care — with empathy, respect, and a commitment to inclusivity. 

Before becoming a midwife, Ams worked as a counselor and harm reduction worker. This previous experience continues to influence their midwifery practice today. It’s through this lens that they support clients, recognizing the complexities of people’s lives and experiences and offering care that honors their unique needs. 

Outside of midwifery, Ams enjoys spending time in nature, whether it’s hiking, beachcombing, or reading. The natural world is an essential part of their life, providing a sense of peace and connection that nourishes both their personal and professional well-being.

Looking toward the future, Ams has a clear vision for how midwifery can evolve to meet the needs of today’s diverse population. They envision midwives expanding their scope of practice to provide care across the full reproductive life cycle, from supporting individuals through menopause to offering abortion care and extending postpartum and newborn care into the early years of life.
