We are excited to introduce "Meet the Midwife Mondays!" Each week, we'll spotlight a different midwife with a personal profile, giving you a chance to get to know the amazing professionals behind the care. Learn more about our first midwife Rosesandra below.
Inspiration and Rewards
Rosesandra Ewokyili Ekpale, a registered midwife from Ghana, shares her heartfelt journey into midwifery. Her inspiration came from witnessing the joy of birthing people in Ghana, dressed in white to celebrate their successful pregnancies. The most rewarding part of her role is seeing the pure happiness on a birthing person’s face when they first hear their baby’s cry—a moment that never fails to warm her heart.
Rosesandra further says "I developed an interest in Canadian Midwifery after talking to a Midwifery Lecturer (Ghana) who did her PhD in Canada. With further investigations, a friend and colleague introduced the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program to me. The IEMBP is interactive, thorough, and intense. I must say the program is an eye-opener and very informative. It gave me an insight into what Canadian midwifery especially in the BC context was about. My greatest struggle was appreciating the responsibility of who a primary provider was until I started the clinical placement which is the final part of the program.”
Background and Interests
Rosesandra is a BIPOC midwife, married with two children, and identifies as a cisgender woman. She completed her midwifery training in 2011 and has been practicing since 2012. Her professional journey includes volunteering as a project secretary, implementing initiatives to boost hospital attendance and early AnteNatal Care (ANC) initiation, working as a unit head, serving as a preceptor and e-facilitator for online nurse training. Outside of midwifery, she enjoys gardening, cooking, and watching movies.
