Find a midwife

Commercial General Liability Insurance (CGL)

Each practicing midwife in BC is required to carry CGL insurance in addition to malpractice insurance coverage.

CGL insurance is designed to protect midwives’ business from exposure from third-party injury or property damage arising from sources other than the provision of professional services. Midwives need to maintain a CGL policy to ensure these exposures are properly addressed.

Members may choose any provider they like, as long as their coverage meets the minimum requirements of:

  • 2,000,000 in commercial general liability
  • CGL coverage for all practice locations i.e. clinic, hospital, client home.

For details, please refer to the MABC Policy on CGL (PDF).

Registration Requirement

The MABC office must receive proof of CGL insurance prior to processing new registration applications and during membership renewal.

Proof of CGL insurance in the form of a certificate of insurance must be provided at the time of membership renewal. The Certificate of Proof of CGL must include the items outlined in the Policy on CGL (PDF).

MABC's brokered Group CGL plan information

The MABC has brokered a CGL group policy available to its members that been reviewed by the Midwives Protection Program (MPP) and confirmed that it meets MPP’s requirements for CGL coverage.  While not required to utilize the group policy, midwives must ensure that CGL coverage is in place to meet the underwriting requirements of MPP.
