BC midwives pleased with Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal ruling

posted on September 25, 2018

On September 24, 2018, the Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM) won a landmark pay equity case before Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal. Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC) CEO, Ganga Jolicoeur, today said:

BC’s midwives are pleased Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal has found the Government of Ontario failed to apply a gender equity lens to midwives’ compensation for more than a decade.

It is a win for Ontario’s midwives, midwives across Canada, and all Canadian women as gender-based pay inequity goes well beyond our profession.

We are studying the tribunal’s decision and the potential implications it may have for our members in British Columbia. BC midwives will be entering contract negotiations with the provincial government in early 2019.
