Synopsis: The Midwives Association of BC would like to see an increase in registered midwife-attended births by 35 per cent in the province by 2020. MABC said expanding midwifery service not only provides better maternity care for mothers and their babies, but also helps the provincial government save on medical costs. Statistics indicated that 17 per cent of babies in BC were born with midwifery care, which is higher than Ontario. However, it is lower compared to other countries like New Zealand and England where 70 per cent of babies are born with midwifery care. Ganga Jolicoeur said to expand midwifery service in BC would require an investment of approximately $3 million annually but can help the province save approximately $60 million .
