Financial Controller

Reporting to the Executive Director, the financial Controller will be a critical asset in supporting the day-to-day functioning of the Finance Department by providing their expertise with month and year-end closing activities, reconciling reports and preparation of monthly reports.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle the day-to-day tasks associated with payroll processing through ADP, ensuring timely and accurate payment to employees and payroll reconciliation.
  • Ensuring that payroll processes comply with relevant laws and regulations. This includes staying up to date with tax laws and reporting requirements.
  • Reconciling bank and credit card statements.
  • Maintaining the general ledger.
  • Update and maintain the Deferred Revenue Schedule.
  • Manage the Depreciation Schedule of fixed assets.
  • Act as backup for Accounts Payable and Receivables.
  • Prepare month-end and year-end adjusting entries.
  • Provide support to auditors during financial audits.
  • Support the Finance Director with implementing updates and changes to accounting policies.
  • Report the annual GST rebate.
  • Review T4s of staff for accuracy before they are distributed.
  • Prepare T4As for members, ensuring accuracy and timelines are met.
  • Analyze budget variance reports and identify favourable and unfavourable variances.
  • Conduct a variety of analyses, such as trend analysis and vertical and horizontal analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration.
  • +5 years of recent, related experience in accounting, administration, bookkeeping or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles/accrual-based accounting methods.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), Quickbooks, and ADP.
  • Experience working alongside senior management in the business environment.
  • Independent, detail-oriented, a self-starter with a high degree of focus on accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Familiarity with financial compliance regulations.
  • CPA Designation or working towards designation is needed.
  • Knowledge of and experience with accounting and reporting in the not-for-profit sector is ideal.
