Position Title: Registered Midwife
The Seabird Island Band offers more than 20 dynamic health services, including family practice medicine, maternity care including midwifery care, Nursing Home Health, massage therapy, naturopathic medicine, dental care, early childhood development, nutritionist services, mental health and outreach programs to a variety of First Nations Bands through Health Transfer Agreements, and/or contracts. Seabird Island is at the forefront of innovative practice for Indigenous health and currently seeks an experienced midwife with the cultural competency, skills, knowledge and judgement to join our existing Maternal Child Health team and work with a unique community.
Position Summary:
The Seabird Island Band is seeking applications for an experienced and well-qualified full-time Registered Midwife. The successful applicant will join the Seabird Health department and provide clinical midwifery care in a team of two/shared care capacity, providing professional and culturally competent midwifery care to new and expectant mothers and families. The successful applicant will also provide joint clinical leadership and mentorship to the Maternal Child Health team, an innovative, collaborative group that currently consists of a Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse Coordinator, Maternal Child Health Registered Nurse and a number of Kwiyo:s (respected Aunties/doulas) workers, some of whom are Licensed Practical Nurses.
Applicants must be willing and able to provide services in a culturally safe and appropriate manner in collaboration with other health care providers, community members and other stakeholders. Applicants must also be prepared to mentor young community members in a supportive role while returning midwifery services to the communities.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Completion of a Midwifery Education Program from a recognized institution
• Registration with the College of Midwives of BC
• Registration with the Midwives Association of BC
• WorkSafe BC coverage
• Minimum three years providing full scope midwifery services in BC or other Canadian jurisdiction
• Experience with all aspects of perinatal, maternal and newborn care
• Experience with supervising staff, managing small teams and program administration
• Familiarity with Stó:lō or First Nations Culture, experience working in First Nations communities
• Flexible availability including days, evenings and weekends, to meet client and community needs
• Willingness to become engaged in the communities services
• Knowledge of the Stó:lō Culture, traditions and language would be an asset
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
• Good sense of humour
Primary Responsibilities:
• Work as an autonomous, contracted Registered Midwife with our current Registered Midwife, providing full scope midwifery care for up to 30 families per year
• Supervise and assist in the ongoing growth and development of Maternal Child Health programs in surrounding communities
• Work within the regulations and standards of care of the College of Midwives of British Columbia
• Provide group prenatal and postpartum care as part of the Maternal Child Health team
• Work within a culturally vibrant community in accordance of and with respect for community values, traditions and policies, all team and community members
• Respond sensitively to cultural differences in providing care to the woman and her family
• Hold or qualify for hospital privileges at Chilliwack General Hospital and Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
A creative, attractive, salaried compensation package will be offered to the successful applicant.
Compensation will occur through MSP billings supplemented with funding for Maternal Child Health Program administration and development, and other program involvement. It is expected that applicants will be available and willing to practice on a full time basis and will not hold other midwifery practice positions.
