Job Summary
The Midwifery Clinical Placement Community Liaison is a 0.2 FTE (1 day a week) administrative position that acts as a liaison between the UBC Midwifery program, the Health Authority, and clinical sites/preceptors in their region. Working within the unique environment of a distributed midwifery program, the Clinical Placement Community Liaison will work under the direction of the Clinical Placement Lead and support the education opportunities of UBC Midwifery students. The Liaison will also support the program in continuing to establish and build relationships with UBC Midwifery clinical faculty, regional health authorities and hospitals. UBC Midwifery will be hiring one position for each of the following health authorities: Fraser Health Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Vancouver Island Health Authority, Northern Health Authority, and Interior Health Authority.
Organizational Status
The Bachelor of Midwifery and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) are fully distributed entry to practice Midwifery Education Programs delivered currently in Vancouver, Surrey and Victoria. Clinical placements for all undergraduate and bridging students take place throughout the year, with specific periods identified for more robust placement requirements. The development, implementation and management of these programs are complex and require close collaboration between the Midwifery Program, the UBC Faculty of Medicine, the hospital and the health authorities, as well as Midwifery clinical preceptors. The Clinical Placement Community Liaison will be supported by the Clinical Placement Coordinator and Student Services Manager & Advisor. The Liaison will be supported by and take operational direction from both the Midwifery Program and the Department of Family Practice, including the Midwifery Program Director and the administrative leadership within the Department.
Work Performed
The Clinical Placement Community Liaison will be responsible for supporting students and clinical preceptors in their community as needed during clinical placement rotations. This may include, but is not limited to:
• Liaise between UBC Midwifery Program and Healthy Authority / Clinical Sites Preceptor engagement, recruitment and retention (ie: leading lunch and learns, facilitating clinic visits)
• Develop and manage surveys sent to RM’s for feedback (goal to be in person)
• Keep an up-to-date spreadsheet of all RM’s in your health authority, including teams, clinics, and contacts
• Liaise with RM’s in your health authority to improve preceptor relations, support preceptors
• Each semester (or as needed), reach out to RM’s in your health authority to determine availability to precept students
• Check in with the Clinical Placement Lead monthly
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Clinical Placement Community Liaison must exercise considerable judgement initiating and carrying through with various activities critical to the functioning of the Midwifery clinical placements and the program’s relationships with external stakeholders. Exercising poor judgement, ineffective communications, or lack of confidentiality could result in strained relations that compromise the Divisional activities and the Midwifery Program. The Midwifery Director may need to intercede in order to resume a productive working relationship.
Minimum Qualifications
Practicing midwife within the identified health authority. A clinical faculty appointment with the Faculty of Medicine.
Preferred Qualifications
• An understanding of Midwifery skills and practice are required.
• An understanding of the systems and requirements in place to support student’s entrance into a new health authority/hospital.
• Maturity, diplomacy, and tact to exercise independent judgment and effectively cope in a highly political health care environment.
• Proven exceptional verbal and written interpersonal skills to succeed working in a unique health professional education environment.
• Knowledge of health professional education.
• Understanding of Midwifery organizational course structure.
• Proven experience building relationships with professionals and a demonstrated understanding of the complexity of engaging these individuals in clinical teaching roles.
• Experience leading change in an environment of constant change and ambiguity by creating and communicating a vision and taking appropriate action to ensure acceptance and support.
• Experience in fostering the long-term learning and development of clinical faculty through coaching, managing performance, and mentoring; supporting reports and indirect reports in an environment of continuous quality improvement.
• Demonstrated leadership and success motivating, engaging, and supporting students and clinical faculty to achieve positive organizational and educational outcomes.
• Must be highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and deeply collaborative
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own perspective and values.
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
